Aqsis 2.0 is coming!

Aqsis is an open source RenderMan-compliant render. The coming new version would have great improvement:

  • Speed. Simple operations should be fast, while complex operations should be possible. The presence of advanced features shouldn’t cause undue slowdowns when they are disabled.
  • Quality. Speed is good, but not at the cost of quality. Any speed/quality trade offs should be under user control, and default settings should avoid damaging quality in typical use cases.
  • Simplicity. This is about the code - the old code has a lot of accumulated wisdom, but in many places it’s complex and hard to follow. Hopefully hindsight will lead us toward a simpler implementation.

V-Ray RT for Autodesk Maya is one of the few new products that will be introduced to the market in 2010. Now for all current V-Ray for Maya users Chaos Group introduces the interactive rendering technology that allows immediate communication between the user and the virtual environment. V-Ray RT applies the changes on the scene automatically and progressively and generates a photorealistic preview of the scene. It is designed to improve and fasten the artist’s work and significantly shorten the lighting and shading set up of a project.

The feature lists put a lot emphasis on the interaction between the renderer and Maya. Is it why it is called R(eal)T(ime)?

Pixar did a special guest technology presentation at Siggraph showing off their PTEX technology working inside Autodesk Mudbox. Amazing technology that everyone is scrambling for.

It seems Mudbox is gaining more popularity then Zbrush for technical personals in the film and game industry.  But Zbrush is welcome by artists in big studios as well. especially the latest Zbrush 4 brings a lots new exciting features.

This video shows how the ptex can be incorporated in the asset development pipeline with Renderman as the rendering backbone. Some tools in the presentation are still in prototype, but are promising to show us how render time can be greatly improve by adapting the new texturing technology, the PTEX.
